Subtly, My Baby Cares For
I have been diggin’ the divas of jazz lately and it has been a challenge deciding which song to post first. I’ve landed with “My Baby Just Cares For Me” as sung by Nina Simone - originally written for the 1930, musical comedy film Whoopee!. I have been fascinated with this tune because I am used to the “Sinner Man”, “See Line Woman”, “Feelin Good” Nina Simone tunes which have such power and drive, musically and vocally. This song however, shows Nina in a much more subtle light.
The beginning starts off in which Nina is singing so light its almost hard to hear her. Throughout the song her voice is lofty, but sugary and warm. The instrumentation is soft and is a perfect compliment to Nina’s delicate phrasing. Nina’s piano solo is really nice too - she’s not trying to get too fancy, but just lay back in the gentle groove. This has become a newfound favorite for me. Enjoy
