Recession Proof Pt.  1

The economy has the unprecedented majority of us bound tight, and while we may be deficient monetarily, we must account for that in other areas.  For a couple weeks I’ve wanted to do a series of posts about songs that show the abundance of love and the lack of cash.  This idea is not only hilarious to me, but hits home as well (I guess you just can’t take yourself so seriously sometimes).  It has been difficult finding songs of this framework, and I would love to hear from anyone out there who knows of a song that fits with this idea.  I have found a couple….

This first song, “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” (McHugh & Fields) is a classic played by Django Reinhardt.  I honestly don’t know much about this version because I haven’t been able to find it anywhere else but my friend Milo’s harddrive.  However, Reinhard’s solo at the beginning is so beautiful; he throws in lightning fast melodic lines and also slows things down and interjects these really bluesy bends.

I do not know the name of the singer, but I do know he is one soulful cat.  His phrasing and scatting is jazzy and playful, sometimes not even bothering to sing the lyrics but scatting the rest of the verse’s line.  I think the reason I like it so much is because when sings, its sounds as if he’s smiling about his situation.  His phrasing and intonation has no shame or conviction about his state of monetary poverty.  Aside from this, I think it just shows where our priorities should lay, and if we get these things straightened out, we can be just as happy.

So people out there in Internetland remember, this recession has no effect on what is most important.
