Brazilian Music on Speed…

…Is what this Soil & Pimp Session song, “Paraiso” sounds like.  And yes, I have returned to our favorite Japanese death-jazz band.  Well I guess the only Japanese death jazz band that I know of.  And once again they are doing their thing: molding their diverse influences to suite their highly energetic, eccentric - but always familiar - needs.  I couldn’t be happier.

I chose this song from the album because it is the most exciting to me.  I really love how they layer the vocals on top of the main melodic lines and theme of the song.  It gives this grandiose gloss to the chorus that may not have been attained had the voices not been there.  To see what I mean, listen to the part in the song about three quarters through when the piano starts playing those pretty notes and then the horns jump back in - the voices are not there at first.  After one time through the chorus the voices comes back in and atmosphere is taken up another notch.

“Paraiso” comes from their sixth album which they simply titled, 6.  It features thirteen songs which range from covers to originals, instrumental to vocal tracks (one of which featuring Jamie Cullem), jazz to ska to rock and roll.  It is a recording that is sure to please those with a diverse range of sensibilities.

Now if I could only see these guys live!

Jake
